LESSON 1 (2 Hours)

Introduction to course. The Pattern Palette. Notes.

How to take measurements and adjust them to the grid for drafting.
Drafting the basic bodice (front and back)
Students will be provided with paper for the first lesson’s drafting projects but are expected to purchase (preferably) heavy Vilene or brown paper for their future drafts. These blocks are used continually throughout the course and normal paper can’t withstand the wear and tear. Requirements for lesson 2 will be discussed at the end of the lesson.
     
LESSON 2 (2 Hours)

Basic Tee. Rib trim neckline.
Inset sleeves

Kimono sleeve top
Adjusted to new lines

Cowl neck Top
Inset sleeves.

Lesson 2 expands on the basic bodice block and explains how to adapt the block to new lines. A pattern is drafted, paper-fitted and then altered where required. The pattern is then placed out on the fabric and cut. Pattern pieces are pinned where possible but sewing is expected to be done as ‘homework’. Any problems can be discussed at your next lesson.

     
LESSON 3 (2 Hours)

The Pattern Palette.
Notes

Drafting the basic sleeve
Adaption of the basic sleeve.

Students will be provided with paper for the lesson’s drafting projects. Please bring Vilene or brown paper to draft your final sleeve draft. Requirements for your next lesson will be discussed at the end of the lesson.

     
LESSON 4 (2 Hours)

Basic shirt top with collar and waist band and faced armholes

Shirt top with mandarin collar, ruffle detail waist band

Round neck with facing, ¾ sleeve, fitted jacket-top

Polycotton or viscose. Select 1 or 2 designs from the examples to complete drafting lesson 3. Lesson 4 further expands on the basic bodice block and explains how to adapt the block to new lines. A pattern is drafted, paper-fitted and then altered where required. Detail is paid to sleeves and sleeve variation. Sewing is expected to be done as ‘homework’. Any problems can be discussed at your next lesson.
     
LESSON 5 9 (2 Hours)

 

Notes

Drafting the basic skirt
Adaption of the basic skirt.

Students will be provided with paper for this lesson’s drafting projects. Please bring Vilene or brown paper to draft your final sleeve draft. Requirements for your next lesson will be discussed at the end of the lesson.

     
LESSON 6 (2 Hours)

Basic A-line with faced waist and detail slit

Flaired paneled skirt with wist band

Pencil skirt with wide fitted band.

Polycotton or viscose. Select 1 or 2 designs from the examples to complete drafting lesson 3. Lesson 6 explores variations of your basic skirt block. Sewing is expected to be done as ‘homework’. Any problems can be discussed at your next lesson.

     
LESSON 7 (2 Hours)

Drafting the basic dress block

Students will be provided with paper for this lesson’s drafting projects. Please bring Vilene or brown paper to draft your final draft. Requirements for your next lesson will be discussed at the end of the lesson.
     
LESSON 8 (2 Hours)
Bring a picture of your dress you want to draft
Drafting the dress of your choice
Paper fitting, adjustments

Students are encouraged to put to use the knowledge they have gained up to now. Advice and guidance is given. Pattern can be cut out in class.

     
LESSON 9 (2 Hours)

Basic Pants block

Measuring and drafting of the block

Paper fitting, adjustments

Remember to bring your Vilene / brown paper for the final draft

     
LESSON 10 (2 Hours)

Pull-on wide-pipe drawstring pants

Pull-on elasticised cropped pants

Fitted pants- pleat detail and zipper

Adaption of Pants block. Lesson 10 explores variations of your basic pants block. Sewing is expected to be done as ‘homework’.

     

If you feel you require additional training in the above set program discuss with me to arrange extra lessons as the program is flexible in order for you to get a thorough knowledge on the drafting concepts. Once all 10 lessons above are complete, drafting for men, drafting for children and drafting lingerie and swimwear can also be arranged.

 

  • Each lesson payable in advance. Full course is 10 lessons of 2 hours each once or twice a week.
  • Includes notes and ‘Sample’ Pattern Palette (drafting template)
  • Once our ‘final’ palette is produced it will be available at an additional price but please be aware that the palette included in the course is usable and practical and is at no extra cost to you.

Please bring your own:
- Pencils - Eraser - Vilene / brown paper - Pritt glue - File and plastic sleeves for notes - Material (as required)
- Pins - Sharp scissors - Tape Measure - Own Material and accessories for your projects when required.
